We got to speak with Andrea Bonilla, the founder of Rocket City Tumbling Academy. Andrea has a background at The Matrix Gym, where she and her husband, Jason, coached tumbling and built strong relationships with students and families. Later, they launched East Coast Karate, bringing martial arts instruction into the community.
“Opening this gym is the natural next step in combining our experience and passion for teaching into a space of our own.”
Offered at Rocket City Tumbling Academy will be tumbling classes, divided by skill level, as well as the continuation of East Coast Karate. Andrea says that these classes will focus on discipline, respect, and personal development. They will also offer services for the public including open gyms, birthday parties, seasonal camps, parent night out, and potential future workshop courses. When asked what she believes RCTA will bring to the community, she responded:
“We chose the word Academy intentionally. Our goal is to create a structured, supportive environment where kids can build strong tumbling skills that carry over into many performance paths, whether it’s dance, cheerleading, martial arts, or acrobatics. Our martial arts program adds life skills like respect, focus, perseverance, and self-control. We’re building a space where athletes can thrive—physically, mentally, and personally.”
Our VP of Retail, Anusha Alapati Davis, represented the landlord and facilitated the deal that is being this concept to the former Walmart Neighborhood Market on Oakwood. Andrea said that she chose this location because it offers accessibility to families throughout Huntsville and surrounding areas, along with the space and layout needed to create a high-quality training environment.
They anticipate opening in early 2026 to the public. They currently have their martial arts program up and running with fall classes that will be transferring to the new location. They are interested in doing a soft-launch with the previous Matrix patrons before then to allow their staff to brush up on their coaching before they open to the public.
