Last week, the local news announced that a new concept was making its way to downtown Huntsville. This new convenience store, known as DGX, will open on the ground floor of the newly constructed city parking deck at Greene Street and Holmes Avenue. DGX is a creation from the Dollar General corporation “designed to meet the unique needs of customers living, working, and visiting vibrant metropolitan centers.” This is the first DGX store to open in the state of Alabama.

DGX is not your typical Dollar General store. The concept came to life when customer research determined that millennials were one of the largest segments shopping at Dollar Generals. Soon after, the company revealed plans to open the original DGX stores in key metropolitan markets across America. Now, Huntsville will join the ranks of larger cities such as Nashville, Raleigh, Philadelphia, Cleveland, and others who have welcomed a DGX into its city center.

Chad Emerson, President and CEO of Downtown Huntsville, Inc., is excited for the retail concept to open in the neighborhood.

“As downtown Huntsville continues to grow into a 24-hour destination to live, play, and stay, it’s important to complement our talented local entrepreneurs with a well-operated option that can meet daily needs,” said Emerson. “DGX offers a wide range of convenience goods like grab-and-go food, cleaning supplies, pet supplies, and more. It also provides more curated selections of higher-end items like home décor, electronics, and beauty products. DGX is an excellent business to bring a blend of convenience, affordability, and quality to the downtown district.”

The design of the new store is meant to capture the aesthetics of an ever-changing urban landscape. It’s equipped with checkout lanes for high-volume stores, which means customers can get in and out quickly. Interiors are made to capture the industrial vibe of busy downtowns and metropolitan centers. For locals, it will provide access to many traditional grocery store items including basics like milk and eggs, healthier options, snacks, affordable beauty products, and over-the-counter medications.

There’s also home décor, fresh grab-and-go meals, assorted electronics, seasonal items, frozen foods, and paper products. It’s the perfect downtown pitstop on your way to work, when you’re headed home, or when you need to stock up on a few groceries for a party. Best of all, it’s all within walking distance of The Avenue and Belk Hudson Lofts, and close to many nearby hotels, event centers, and local attractions. DGX will make living and visiting downtown Huntsville more convenient than ever before.

“Having an option like DGX in downtown will make the area even more desirable to the many residents and working professionals who call the neighborhood home,” said Anusha Alapati Davis, Vice President of Retail at Crunkleton. “Its trendy atmosphere and eclectic mix of offerings—many not typical at its parent company, Dollar General—is the perfect fit for our evolving downtown. We are excited to welcome them to Huntsville and fill the gap for convenience, affordability, and style all in one concept.” Anusha represented the brand in its property search and is honored to have helped usher DGX into the Alabama market.
