If you’re in commercial real estate or any sales-driven profession, you know how important relationships are. But what does it really take to grow your business?

In this article, we break down three core areas that can help you build a strong foundation and generate long-term success: strategic networking, maximizing opportunities, and cultivating personal connections.

Whether you’re new to the field or looking to sharpen your approach, these principles can help take your sales career to the next level.

1. Build Your Network with Purpose

Not all networking opportunities are created equal. To grow in commercial real estate—or any sales role—be intentional about where you spend your time.

Look for groups that connect you with professionals in or around your industry. Once you join, don’t just attend. Volunteer. Join a committee. Become someone people recognize and trust.

Building name recognition and trust takes time, but it’s one of the most valuable investments you can make in your career.

2. Treat Every Opportunity Like It Matters

Early in your career, no listing or lead is too small. Every deal you work teaches you something new: pricing trends, negotiation tactics, and market dynamics.

If you’re in commercial real estate, learn the ins and outs of lease rates, cap rates, and NOI. In other sales roles, focus on understanding your product’s value and what motivates your target audience.

The more you practice, the more confident and capable you become when larger deals come your way.

3. Turn Everyday Moments Into Meaningful Connections

Success in sales often comes down to who you know—and how you treat them. Whether you’re having a conversation at a networking event, chatting with a neighbor, or meeting someone at a restaurant, always stay open.

Approach people with curiosity. Ask questions. Listen. Even if someone doesn’t need your service today, they may remember you tomorrow—or refer someone who does.

Keep Going

This is just a snapshot of how to grow in a relationship-based industry like commercial real estate. Stay consistent, stay visible, and keep showing up.

The effort you put in today builds the network and reputation that will support your success tomorrow.
