Over the past year, The Avenue on Jefferson Street has quickly become a place where visitors and residents of downtown can live, sip, shop, dine, workout, and relax all within one convenient destination.
Recently, the much-anticipated The Moon Bakeshopopened its doors selling decadent cruffins, egg muffins, homemade breads, sandwiches, and much more. Now, Crunkleton Commercial Real Estate is thrilled to share the next tenant that will find a home in the development.
Welcome, Wheelhouse Salon! Since its opening in the Homewood neighborhood of Birmingham five years ago, Wheelhouse has gained a fiercely loyal clientele and added two additional locations—Birmingham metro and Austin, Texas. Now its team is ready to expand operations to Huntsville because they believe the city has a “unique life to it” that is exciting to be a part of.
Wheelhouse Salon will open in a 2,288-square-foot space at the mixed-use development with a tentative opening date of Q4 2019.
“There were many factors that played into our new Huntsville location,” said Johnny Grimes II, co-owner of Wheelhouse. “We believe our brand will resonate well there, and one of our most talented and successful hairstylists moved to the area. This put the right location and the right team in place for us. The Avenue is not only a cool spot geographically, but it’s also a place with fun things happening around it. We feel that we will be a valuable asset to the development and vice versa.”
What is Wheelhouse Salon?
Johnny’s wife Courtney, co-owner and head stylist of the business, was cutting hair for friends and family way before the possibility of her own salon presented itself. By the time she was in high school, Courtney was set on following her passion to become a sought-after stylist.
“I handle the business side and Courtney spends her days doing what she loves—cutting hair, helping educate a team of stylists, and creating a wonderful salon experience for guests,” said Johnny. “She was at a point in her career where she was 100-percent booked and couldn’t accept additional clients. There was really only one way she could continue to grow, and that was by opening her own salon.”
Wheelhouse describes itself as a “team of passionately creative stylists who are dedicated to their craft and the folks in their chairs.”
“We have outstanding stylists who can do everything from a simple bob to an edgy or avant-garde style,” assured Johnny. “Our colorists can execute basic colors, highlights, and can even create vibrant colors flawlessly. Wheelhouse is a place that no matter who you are you will feel welcomed and important.”

In addition to its wonderful service and passionate team, Wheelhouse sought out industry-leading product lines to feature. During visits, guests can choose from two brands of available products—Oribe Hair Care and R+Co.
“Oribe is a very high-end product that made sense for our brand,” said Johnny. “In our experience, it makes hair smell, look, and feel better than anything else we have tried. We also have another line, R+Co, that meets clients’ needs both on price point and quality. It works just as well.”
When it comes to a successful salon, the atmosphere plays a huge role. Wheelhouse cultivates each space to match its slogan—“Where southern charm and good hair meet rock-n-roll and vintage flair.”
“I would describe the atmosphere as high-end with an extremely laid-back vibe,” explained Johnny. “We believe a salon should be welcoming to all. But the atmosphere goes beyond the colors of the wall and furniture in the room. It extends to the way our stylists treat clients from the moment they enter the salon to the time they step outside our doors.”
In order to provide a flawless experience each and every time, Wheelhouse management focuses heavily on its culture and taking care of its team.

When asked what contributed to the salon’s instant popularity and growth, Johnny said that valuing its team and investing in education played a huge role.
“Empowering our team and valuing company culture is part of who we are,” shared Johnny. “Our business is taking care of people, and that starts with our stylists. We attribute a great deal of growth to making our salon a place that stylists are excited to come to every day. Education is also crucial, which is why we bring educators from all over the country—New York, Miami, Los Angeles—to help our team stay up-to-date on the latest trends, methods, and techniques.”
By inviting high-level educators from all over the U.S., the salon’s team is able to perform and feel their best.
“Early on, we started making contacts and relationships with industry professionals that we loved and admired,” said Johnny. “We constantly circulate industry leaders through our salons and that attention is poured into our staff. Of course, we also have a stellar team in-house who provide instruction.”
Johnny also shared that one of its most successful stylists loved the culture at Wheelhouse so much that she drove to Birmingham from Huntsville each day just to remain a member of the team.
“When her husband was transferred to Huntsville for his career, she told us she didn’t want to work with anyone else but Wheelhouse,” added Johnny. “I think that’s an amazing testimony to our company. She will be an important component of the coming Huntsville location.”
