Amy Lennox has been a valued member of the Crunkleton Commercial Real Estate team for six years. As the company’s Leasing Administrator, she handles a plethora of duties that keep the business running.

This week, we sat down with her to learn more about her education, favorite parts of the job, and the story behind her move from Hawaii to Huntsville.

Tell us about your education.

I graduated from the University of Hawaii in 1973 with a degree in psychology. My first experience in property management was also in Hawaii. In 2000, we moved to California. Chuck, my husband, had a job opportunity so we decided it was the best decision.

The move from Hawaii to California was a very big change for us and we thought that I needed a different career than property management. I have two children and I wanted to devote more hours to them. Property management is a very demanding and difficult job that requires you to work all hours in order to do it well. My husband had a very demanding job too, so I wanted something with more predictable hours to benefit our kids.

What are some highlights of your career history?

I’ve always been lucky in my career; I’ve never been unemployed for a long period of time. Some of my positions have been very interesting and challenging—definitely a few stories worth sharing.

In 2004, I found myself without a job. I was supposed to start a position soon, but I didn’t want to take it. Instead, I responded to an ad for an accounting clerk. It was perfect—a part-time job right down the street from my home. I ended up working there for almost ten years.

In 2009, people were laid off because of the economy. The company had a project at Bridge Street in Huntsville and they decided to close their Los Angeles office and relocate all the main people who were involved to Huntsville. It was a great offer, but Chuck needed to have a job in place before I could commit. Luckily, he was able to connect with The Westin and got a job there as Food & Beverage Director. We’ve been happy and living in Huntsville for 11 years now.

How did you get involved with Crunkleton Commercial Real Estate?

I was connected with Wesley in 2014. I knew he had a property management division within the company so I reached out to see if he was looking for anyone. During the interview, I discovered that he needed a person with knowledge in accounting and property management. In the first three months as Lease Administrator, I had to learn several new systems. It was a challenge but I loved it.

My time at Crunkleton has been an awesome learning experience because the job has continually evolved over the years.

What exactly do you do for the business?

I complete all of the bookkeeping, lease administration, lease review, write delivery letters, and create rent commencement letters. I work with the CPAs to make sure they have all questions answered when it comes to financials. Basically, I handle all of the accounting. I work very closely with the property managers too.

What would you say is the greatest challenge in your job?

My position requires extreme focus and attention to detail. When numbers are involved you have to be sure that everything is accurate. It can be tedious at times. I have to go back, again and again, to make sure everything is perfect. Also, there’s a lot of coordination I have to handle as well.

What do you love most about your position?

Honestly, my favorite part of the job is the people I work with. Everyone is very easy to get along with and we have a lot of fun. I am a bit older than many of my coworkers, but we have a great time.

What do you think about the growth of the downtown area during your time at Crunkleton?

It’s always very exciting to see new developments pop up, especially when our company is involved. There has been a lot of change over the past few years and I think it’s positive. We have more options for food and entertainment and things are moving in the right direction. Huntsville is a great place to live and wonderful for families too.

What are some skills you think are important for someone interested in a position similar to yours?

You know, because I do both lease administration and accounting there are a lot of skills involved. In addition to being detail-oriented, they would need to know the accounting principles involved and be comfortable with a heavier workload. They need to be focused, driven, and able to follow through on numerous tasks.

What about commercial real estate interests you?

Well, I first entered the commercial real estate industry in Hawaii. I began lease administration when in California. That’s how I gained my knowledge of the industry. Every day is different when working in commercial real estate because each property is different. You’d think I would be doing the same thing every day but working in this field isn’t monotonous at all. I enjoy that part of it.

What do you do for fun outside of work?

I really like going to the movies and listening to audiobooks. They relax me and take me to another place. I’m always game for adventure and I want to go places I’ve never been to before. England, France, Europe, Asia, and Canada—I don’t want to live in a bubble. People interest me and I love to travel and meet new friends who have different ideas and ways of living. There are a lot of interesting people out there; I want to get out there and see them!
